Scottish Classic Club’s Thornhill Scramble
Report by Richard Winn

The 19th running of the Thornhill Classic Scramble near Dumfries turned into a game of two halves regarding the weather conditions. The bike age related races before the interval were run in an absolute deluge of heavy rain where the rider age related races after the break were held more or less in warm and sunny weather. Despite the tricky conditions the riders coped extremely well, helped by a new course layout which liked by all, being fast, flowing and reasonably smooth. There were plenty of incidents in the wet but nothing of a serious nature.

One of the highlights of the meeting for many and a real turn up for the books was the first win by Ian Ridley’s new Mark Cook built CCM with Scott Maxwell on board when Scott’s dad Joe is a rival CCM manufacture to Mark. This took place in the under 40’s class which Scott won overall ahead of Man of the Meeting Chris Chell with Adam Griggs in third. Three riders had double class wins, these being Pete Hollinshead in the Pre 60’s and the over 40’s, Liston Bell in the bigger Pre65 Class and the Father and son Race and former Scottish Scrambles Champion from 1968 Willie Wallace in the Pre70’s and the over 60’s.

There were also good wins for the comeback kid Keith Mason in the smaller Pre75 Class, Chris Chell in a very competitive Pre75 over 300cc Class, Andy Camm on his 250 Cheney BSA in the smaller Pre 65 Class and the wheelie King Welshman Rob Griffiths in the over 50’s . However some of the best and most fierce racing was in the Twinshocks where Cumbria’s Nigel Sowerby was the victor with his real press on riding style. Paul Chiappa was Nigel’s main adversary but his cause was not helped by missing the start of one of his four races. In third came the very smooth and stylish Chris Smith.

With so many long travelled riders at this meeting the final block of races were cut as time was really moving on but a very well attended prize presentation at the end of the Meeting saw Chris Chell on his Cheney BSA named Man of the Meeting due to his never say die attitude to his racing and his entertaining battles through to the front of the field which netted him his win in one of the most competitive classes. Despite the weather this meeting was still a great success for the Scottish Classic Club which succeeded in attracting some on the very best Classic riders from England, Wales and even Ireland to the picturesque Scottish Borders venue.
