Rigside Classic Scramble - 1st August 2010

Tinto Park, near Rigside, South Lanarkshire

Scottish Classic Club’s Rigside Scramble.

Robbie Allan’s fabulous Tinto Moto Park facility was the venue for this event which was held on a grassy hillside track that was in perfect condition. Robbie’s brother Vic on Bob Pearson’s beautiful Goldstar Metisse looked the favourite for the Pre 65 over 350cc Class but poor starts relegated him to third behind a flying Liston Bell on his Triumph Metisse and Faber BSA mounted Steve Dent.

The first three in the smaller Pre 65 class had some terrific battles but it was Graham ‘Kelso’ Bell on his BSA who came out on top from similarly mounted Eion Munro with the ex. Joel Robert twinport CZ of Stewart Riddell in third. The Goldstars of Ken Soutar and Mike Bell took the top two places in the pre 60’s but in third came an unusual Velocette ridden very solidly by David Turner.

The screaming 250cc AJS Stormer of Andy King took the Pre 70 class from Phil Nelson on his original 1968 Cheney BSA with Kendal’s Smoothie Dent in third. For me the star of the meeting was Derek Macauley who just had one of his days when nobody could touch him and he took the smaller Pre 75 Class on his Bultaco from Ian Stainton and the over 50’s from Dumfries rider Wullie Brown with Fergus Moodie third.

The other double winner was the fast gating Grant McClure who won the bigger pre75 Class on his Maico from John McBethell and Craig Dickson in equal second as well as the over 40’s from a tenacious Billy Chisolm on his Husky. There were also good wins in the over 60’s by Carlisle’s Phil Nelson despite slipping off in one race near the chequered flag and big Scott Gordon on his thundering CCM in the under 40’s.

Three different makes of machine made up the top three in a furiously contested Twinshock class with Graham Smith on his blue Yamaha taking the win from the lovely four stroke XR Honda of Ian Robertson and the Maico of Cumbrian pig farmer Maurice Wharton coming through to third after some poor starts. This was an enjoyable meeting held at a great venue, good enough to host a Motocross Grand Prix.
