Forfar Classic Scramble - 4th April 2010

Scottish Classic Racing Motorcycle Club’s Forfar Scramble.

A track ideally suited to twinshocks and big four strokes was made very slippery by several heavy showers but good racing still ensued with the big hill still rideable due to an allowable detour at the very top.

Twinshock rider Ian Robertson was the star of the day on his big four stroke Honda as he revelled in the conditions and found grip where others struggled. He took the class win with Andy Malloch second and Adam Wright a great third on Ian Ridley’s 1977 380cc CZ.

The thundering Pre 60 bikes put on a good show on such a fast wide course with it’s countless passing opportunities . The Triumph Twin of big Wullie Gordon took the win from the BSA Goldstars of Lee Jackson and track builder Ken Soutar, who later got a deserved class win himself in the over 60’s.

Stewart Riddell had a good day on his flying little 250cc Twinport CZ and won the smaller pre 65 class from Eion Munro and last years class champion Jim Allan. Faber BSA man Steve Dent rode smoothly to wins in the bigger pre65 class and the Pre 70’s but didn’t have much luck later in the day in the over 40’s which was won by the fast starting Grant McClure.

The ever improving Ian Stainton was lightening quick on his Kawasaki to win the Pre 75 up to 300cc Class from an immaculately attired Derek Macaulay on his Bultaco with similarly mounted Brian Aird a very tenacious third. In the bigger Pre 75 class Lewis Bell was in tremendous form on his newly acquired 1974 CCM and took the win from Fred Heenan who had his best ever ride with the Club.

One of the days most impressive rides came from the tigerish Gordon Phillip on his very quick Mark7 Pursang in winning the Over 50’s and a similar bike with Richie McFadden on board took the win in the Over 40’s.Other riders worth a mention for their efforts during the day include Dave Muxlowe and Mark Whitham on their Metisses, Andy King and David Fulton on their AJS Stormers and Fergus Moodie on his Maico.

This was a meeting held on a totally brilliant track, it’s just a pity the weather couldn’t have been kinder but it was still a good start to the season.

Richard Winn.
