Scottish Classic Racing Motorcycle Club’s Dunoon Scramble A perfectly laid out track which allowed the big bikes to get into top gear was the recipe for some terrific high speed battles between two riders over 60 years of age on a gloriously hot day on Dunoon. Mr Classic Scrambling himself John Bethell and Scottish Scrambles Champion from 1968 Willie Wallace raced neck and neck in three wonderful races in the Over 60’s Class with two of them being almost dead heats. In the final deciding leg John held a very narrow lead until halfway round the last lap when Willie looked to have made the winning move but not to be outdone John hit back immediately and punched the air as he took a memorable victory. The rest of the days racing was in similar vein to this with some more great tussles between triple class winner Tommy Anderson and event organiser Grant McClure in both the Pre 75 up and over 300cc Classes over this fast and beautifully flowing course. The big Pre 60 bikes roared round in great style with the win going to ‘the Godfather’ Colin Jackson from ‘Mr Smooth’ Mike Bell and Richard Jones on his 1949 A.J.S. Mike’s two sons Lewis and Liston also had a successful days racing with Lewis beating Colin Jackson to a great win in the Pre 65 over 350cc Class and Liston coming third behind Tommy Anderson and the stylish Richie McFadden in the Under 40’s Class. Willie Wallace got his much deserved win in the Pre 70’s from Carlisle’s Ant Ireland and in the Twinshocks Big Graham Smith took a popular victory from Alistair Aitken and Andy Malloch. This was a great Scramble which everyone thoroughly enjoyed but next up it’s the big one, Thornhill near Dumfries on the 6th July.
