Scottish Classic Racing Motorcycle Club’s Chapelton Scramble The Bell brothers Liston and Lewis had a very good day on a testing but drying course with Lewis taking the win in the Pre65 over 350cc Class with Liston second equal with the ‘Godfather’, Colin Jackson and in the under 40’s Lewis also took a well deserved second behind the flying Tommy Anderson and in front of Pre 65 Trials star Graham Miller. Some of the days best racing was in the Pre 75 over 300cc Class where Glasgow’s Glen Wilson took his first overall win in the Class from Maico mounted John Mitchell and the Husky of Tommy Anderson after some really great battles. Tommy took his customary win in the smaller pre 75 class staving off the best efforts of Derek Macauley and Grant McClure. Father and son Colin and Lee Jackson on their wonderful BSA Goldstar’s took a popular first and second in the pre 60 class from the AJS of the smooth riding Richard Jones. Carlisle’s Ant Ireland who is in dominant form at present easily won the Pre 70 Class from a stylish Michael Dobie in second and the spectacular Jim Allison third. The Twinshock Class was won by CCM mounted Richard Charlton who is virtually unbeatable this season with the very quick John Stokes on his Maico in second and Robert Kennedy who was also CCM mounted in third. After the interval Willie Wallace took the over 60’s class with ease after borrowing John McBethell’s mighty 1974 CCM. Yorkshire’s Dave Muxlow battled his way to a great second place despite a heavy fall when jumping the notorious ditch section of the track and Scottish Scrambles star of the 60’s Mel Hulme finished third. Dave Rowlandson was the over 50’s winner by virtue of sheer determination on a day in which he struggled to find his very best form with Graeme ‘Kelso’ Bell trailing him in second place. In only his third Classic Scramble Ian Ridley took his 380cc CZ to a great third, equal with Fergus Moodie in one of the performances of the day. In the over 40’s Grant McClure did well to defeat the mighty Ant Ireland with a tigerish Derek Macaulay taking third. This brought to a close a really entertaining meeting where the large entry had to work hard on an interesting track which had previously been used regularly in the 70’s, with it’s adverse cambers and tricky but rideable ascent at the back of course where time could easily be gained or lost.
