Scottish Classic Racing Motorcycle Club’s
Abington Scramble by Richard Winn

Dave Rowlandson continued his very successful comeback in winning both his classes on a good fast short course just off the M74 at Abington. In gloriously hot conditions the fast starting Rowlandson beat some strong opposition on his 400cc KTM to take the Pre 75 over 300cc from Tommy Anderson and Grant McClure and the over 50’s from Steve Cornall and Tony Hegarty. Elsewhere there were also Double wins for the aforementioned Tommy Anderson and a very on form Anthony Ireland from Carlisle. Tommy took his customary win in the smaller Pre75 Class but not far behind were the battling duo of Derek Macaulay and Grant McClure. In the under 40’s he beat two fast improving young riders in Lewis Bell and Liam Lamb. In a very competitive Pre 70 Class Anthony held off Edinburgh’s Jim Allison who was also BSA mounted and Welshman Tony Hegarty on his single port CZ. In the over 40’s he took victory from ‘Mr Consistency’ Grant McClure with a good ride to third place from Roy Varty, another rider making a successful comeback. A very stylish Adam Purdham from Penrith took the Pre 65 up to 350cc Class on his BSA from the quick little 250cc Starmaker Metisse of Charlie Robertson and Eoin Munro on a similar four stroke BSA. In the bigger Pre 65 Class there was a tremendous maiden win for young Lewis Bell from the mighty Jackson’s, Colin and son Lee but Colin did gain victory in the Pre 60’s with Lee Second and Richard Jones on his famous old 1947 AJS third. Those very fast Twinshock boys served up their usual feast of ultra competitive and exciting racing with Richard Charlton managing to hold off Paul Chiappa and Craig Smith with his thundering four stroke CCM. There was another CCM success with John McBethel gaining a much deserved win in the over 60’s following a lot of recent bad luck, from Charlie Robertson out this time on his Matchless Metisse and Yorkshire’s Dave Muxlow who was also Metisse mounted but with Triumph power. This had been an smashing meeting with a large entry of riders putting on a excellent show of Classic Scrambling at it’s very best.
