Blencarn 2008 Fast and furious racing on a lush grassland circuit was the order of the day for Kendal Classic Club's Blencarn Scramble. With the sun beating down on the wide open mile long track dust may have been a problem but it wasn't really an issue on the clay based earth. First up were the pre 60 boys and Steve Gagg from Derbyshire on his 650cc Tribsa took the honours from the Jackson brothers, Peter on a BSA Gold Star and Steve on another Tribsa. Two wins and a second saw Kendal's Steve Dent take the pre 65 up to 350cc class from Phil Sanders also on a 350cc BSA and Andy Camm on a 250cc BSA. The bigger pre 65 class saw three straight wins for the tremendous Paul Evans on his beautiful Jawa engined Cheney from Chris Dean with local man Bob Kerridge third on his 441 BSA Victor. BSA machines also dominated the pre 70 class with Welshman Bob Stringer winning from two Cumbrian riders Steve Dent and Anthony Ireland. Kawasaki riding Paul Brinicombe took three great wins in the pre 74 up to 250cc class from CZ mounted Eddy Morris and the Honda Elsinore of Aaron Dent. CCM riders Norman Barrow and Tony Barnes couldn't stop the flying CZ of John Littler in the bigger pre 74 class but Tony's brother Keith easily held the two strokes at bay with a superb display of tigerish riding in the pre77 class. Some of the days best racing came from the two Twinshock classes with Miguel de la Rosa all the way from Tenerife just pipping Mark Silvester in the Bandits Class who in turn just beat the tenacious Russell Watson from Saltburn. In the Twinshock Pirates the four stroke Yamaha of Lee Davies split the two Maico riding Scots of Winner Paul Chiappa and smooth riding Walter Bickmore who finished third despite winning two of the races. After the interval Ray McManus determinedly held off Dave Brinicombe to take the over 60's Handicap race with wins for Dave Rowlandson and John Littler in the over 50's and over 40's respectively. The Barnes boys Tony and Keith came first and second in the under 40's from Preston's Jem Parker, whose brother Gary finished third in the final race of the day, the Twinshock handicap, behind local star Gary Sowerby who took the lead near the finish from Robert Brown to end a good race and a great meeting. Everyone stayed for the prize presentation with Scottish legend Willie Wallace doing the honours after a terrific days sport. Report by Richard Winn.
