Scottish Classic Racing Motorcycle Club’s Stonehouse Scramble. A well laid out track, albeit on flattish field but set very wide for plenty of overtaking produced a wonderful meeting at Stonehouse, near Glasgow. After a wet start the track soon dried to near perfect condition and contained straights long enough to allow the big four strokes to get into top gear. Tommy Anderson was the star of the show with three class wins which were aided by his lightning starts whereby he continually swept round the outside on the first bend and appeared in the lead after not always being first off the line. In the pre 75 up to 300cc he beat Aaron Dent from Kendal with four stroke Honda mounted Andrew Alston in third. In the Pre 75 over 300cc class and the under 40’s he beat Scott Gordon into second place although Scott was hampered all day by bad starts and Tommy was away and gone before he could do anything about it. Steve Dent on his Faber BSA also had a very good day by taking the Pre 70 class from a rejuvenated Phil Nelson, beating both the Bell boys, Lewis and Liston to win the Pre 65 over 350cc Class and coming equal first with Grant McClure in the over 40’s. Steve was riding so smoothly on his great handling machine that he didn’t look to be going that quickly but very few people could get near him and he had his most successful days racing with the Scottish Classic Cub. One rider who could in fact get near Steve and indeed beat him in one of the Pre 70 races was Phil Nelson on his Cheney BSA. Phil who has not been having the best of seasons also took the over 60’s class in great style from Kelso Bell and builder of this excellent track Tom Forsyth. In the over 50’s big Ken Soutar got the better of the spectacular Jim Allison and Maico man Fergus Moodie and in the Pre 65 up to 350cc some the days best racing was seen between the two strokes of winner Jim Allan on his Bultaco Metisse and Stuart Riddell on his beautiful twin port CZ. These two were so closely matched that you could have put a blanket over them throughout the day’s racing. Eion Munro thundered in third on his B40 BSA to end another brilliant meeting for the Club.
