Scottish Classic Racing Motorcycle Club’s Hume Scramble. After early morning rain the prospects for this meeting weren’t looking very good, however once the sun came out the technical and very undulating track was absolutely superb. The hill after the steeply bermed corner became no problem and all the riders that stuck it out to the very end revelled in a course that was extremely rewarding to ride. As a result the racing got faster and closer as the day went on and featured some tremendous battles, often involving up to six riders at a time. This was the case particularly in the combined under and over forties races with the victors after some furious racing being Tommy Anderson and Grant McClure respectively. However they were given a hard time by the likes of Liston Bell, Andy King, Derek Macauley and Ian Stainton. The most successful rider of the day was Tommy Anderson on his Husqvarna but early in the meeting he seemed to be struggling with some parts of the course but once it really dried out he was absolutely flying and was a joy to watch. Ian Stainton from Kendal rode his Kawasaki extremely well to beat Derek Macauley for second behind Tommy in the Pre75 up to 300cc Class, after Derek had slipped off yards from the flag when about to take second in the first race, allowing Ian to nip past before Derek could get back on his Bultaco. Another successful rider was Steve Dent on his very quick Faber BSA. He won the Pre 70 Class from the swashbuckling Jim Allison and then finished second to Lewis Bell in the bigger pre65 Class, with Mike Woods on his very rare 360cc Twin Port CZ in third place. Another twin port CZ, only this time a 250cc, featured in the smaller pre 65 Class with Stewart Riddell on board. He managed to take the win from local man Graeme Bell with a battling Jim Allan third. Big Ken Soutar on his Goldstar took the Pre60 Class from Mike Bell with Richard Jones on his Wonderful road based 1949 AJS in third. Mick Mosely from North Yorkshire had a consistent days riding with good third places in both the Pre70’s and the over 50’s Classes and another rider worth mentioning was Andrew Bain who was riding for Ian Ridley’s Team CZ. Racing in his very first Classic Scramble Andrew was well towards the front in all his races and only just missed out on podium places in both the Pre75 over 300cc Class and the under 40’s so is definitely one to watch for the future. To finish an excellent meeting Ken Soutar took his second win of the day in the over 50’s but had to fight very hard to hold off a determined challenge from Maico mounted Fergus Moodie.
