Fife Classic Scramble - 29th April 2007

Ian Charlton and Callum Sangster

Scottish Classic Racing Motorcycle Club’s Leslie Scramble

This meeting must rank as one of the very best in the club’s 20 year history with so many of the races being close at the front together with battles between several riders going on all the way down the field. It really was Classic and Twinshock racing at it’s very best but ironically the star of the day Ian Charlton failed to feature in the results due to mechanical problems with his CCM. He led all his races at some point before becoming involved in some titanic battles with the much younger Simon Watson who was hampered by poor starts but Ian’s style and sheer determination really thrilled the spectators. In his last race of the day he held second to Simon within sight of the flag but his machine failed again, whereupon he heroically pushed it uphill to finish fourth before almost collapsing with the sheer effort of it all. Simon took the overall Twinshock class win from Graham Smith with Callum Sangster in third.

Carlisle’s Phil Nelson was another rider who was involved in some tremendous scraps, firstly with Anthony Ireland in the Pre70 class and latterly with John McBethell in the over 60’s races as Phil wrapped up a very successful debut for his 500cc Cheney Victor. Another double winner was Keith Barnes in the pre75 over 300 cc class and in the under 40’s where some more good battles ensued between Keith and Tommy Anderson on his smaller engined 250cc Husky. Indeed Tommy took his customary win in the smaller pre 75 class but this time he was pursued ferociously by the ever improving Derek Macaulay and his flying Bultaco who at times got very close to Tommy. In third was Mark Johnstone who like Phil Nelson was also having a successful debut ride on his machine, this time a beautiful red 250cc Husqvarna as the Swedish flyers start to become very popular in Scottish Classic Racing.

The Club’s most improved rider, Craig Dickson, had an inspired ride in the under 40’s class as he rocketed into the lead on his heavy but very rideable four stroke XT Yamaha to hold much more experience riders at bay before eventually finishing third overall in his best ride to date. Mike Bell also had his best meeting for some time and took the overall win in the pre 60’s while the tigerish Jim Allan did the same in the pre65 up to 350cc class with smooth riding Steve Dent from Kendal taking the bigger pre 65 class from fast gating legend George Hodge.

Big Ken Soutar won the over 50’s class in fine style from Graeme ‘the hat’ Bell and Tony Hegarty all the way from North Wales in third, to add to his second place in the pre70’s. All in all it was just a great days racing with scintillating action right to the final race. Everyone awaits the next meeting at Dunoon on the 3rd June with great anticipation.
