Scottish Classic Racing Motorcycle Club's Earlston Scramble This meeting was greatly anticipated due to it being 40 years since this famous venue was last used and it more than lived up to the expectation. With it's spectacular uphill and downhill swoops it provided a course that all the riders enjoyed. Phil Nelson from Carlisle was the most successful rider of the day by winning the pre 70 Class where his battles with Ant Ireland were the highlight of the day, together with coming second to the mighty McBethell in the over 60’s after the interval when a heavy shower made track rather slippery. Heversham's Keith Barnes had a double victory snatched away from him when after winning the pre 75 over 300 cc Class the Wilkinson CCM expired in the last race of the under 40’s Class handing victory to Richard McFadden with Husky mounted Tommy Anderson second. Tommy had earlier won all three races in the pre 75 up to 300cc Class from Bultaco man Derek Macauley and Mark Johnston on another Husky. Unfortunately Mark took a heavy tumble on the last lap of the last race of the day in the under 40’s and broke his collarbone. The Jackson clan were out in force as usual and Colin took second to Mike Bell in the pre 1960 Class in front of brother Steve in third. Colin also took second behind George Hodge, who rode at Earlston 40 years ago, in the pre65 over 350cc Class. The spectacular Peter Yeats kept everyone entertained in third place. In the smaller pre 65 class Championship leader Jim Allan rode tigerishly but had to give best to BSA mounted Euan Monroe. In third was Andrew Johnson on a very original Dot. One of the features of the meeting were storming rides through the field to second by Mike Barnes in the pre 75 over 300cc Class while son Keith cleared off at the front of the field. Similar battles through the pack were necessary for a flying Colin Barrie on his Maico in the Twinshocks as he took third place behind winner Richard Charlton with his father Ian second, both CCM mounted. Ken Soutar won the over 50’s class as usual but this time riding his two stroke Husqvarna due to problems with his usual CCM. A stylish Mick Mosely came second in front of the single port CZ of Tony Hegarty. Another rider revelling in the tricky conditions towards the end of the day was Allister Aird who stormed to third on his AJS Stormer in the over 60’s. Earlston provided a memorable days racing on probably the best track the Club has ever had - brilliant!
