Although there were some grey clouds, it was a great day, it didn't rain and the sun did shine. And Ken Soutar (above) was enjoying every moment of it in the Over 50's Class |

Richard's Report Riders were greeted with fine weather and a dry but thankfully dust free track for the sixth round of the Scottish Classic Club’s Championship at Gorebridge. The day produced some very notable performances with a fine display by the only double victor of the day Colin Barrie who was in fact riding a Victor, of the BSA Metisse variety. Colin won both the Pre70 Class where he faced some spirited opposition from Michael Dobie with long travelled and welcome visitor from North Wales Tony Hegarty in third on his very nice side pipe CZ and the Under 40’s where he defeated Tommy Anderson and Andrew Alston. However Tommy did achieve an overall victory in the Pre 75 up to 300cc Class which is quite remarkable in view of his horrendous recent crash at the Nostalgia Scramble where it was originally suspected he had broken his back. His main opposition came from Kawasaki man Ian Stainton with Andrew Alston again third but this time sharing with Husky mounted Mark Johnston. In fact the Stainton family had a very good day with Ian also getting third in both the Over 40’s and the Twinshocks to add to his Dad Stuart’s second in the Over 50’s. In the Pre 65 Under 350cc Class some very neat and quick riding from twice former Class Champion Ray McManus gained him his first overall win of the season. The first four riders in the Class were unusually all mounted on different makes of machine with BSA B40 winning from Jim Allan’s Bultaco Metisse, Douglas Grant’s Greeves Challenger and a very rare Starmaker Sprite ridden with great style by Steve Pointer. In the bigger Pre 65 class Mike Wylie was in dominating form as was Robert Kennedy in the Pre 75 Over 300cc Class. The Twinshocks saw one of the Clubs star riders Richard Charlton defeat the great Norman Barrow however Norman was a joy to watch as he smoothly came through the field from poor starts. Not so lucky war Richard’s Dad Ian who unfortunately suffered machine trouble later in the day. In warm sunshine after the interval this very enjoyable meeting was brought to a close with Ken Soutar’s customary win in the Over 50’s despite riding with broken ribs and Grant McClure gaining a well deserves victory from Dynamite Derek Macauley in the Over 40’s. A great season comes to an end on October 1st when the Club’s final meeting is held at the fabulous Whitekirk track near North Berwick.
