Report by Richard Winn THE weather Gods smiled on this year's Kendal Classic Club's Nostalgia Scramble, staged at Middleton, near Sedbergh, on Sunday, just enough for a frantic 30-race programme of sheer entertainment that was completed with just one short shower. Star of the meeting and winner of both Pre-70 classes, where he had some tremendous tussles with Carl Pope, and the Pre-74 over 250cc class was Andy Roberton who put on a scintillating display for the large crowd of enthralled spectators. It was the Pre-60 boys up first and Steve Gagg, with two seconds, took the overall from first race winner Peter Jackson on his thundering BSA Gold Star. In third was last year's winner Phil Edwards. Fast-gating Mick Beech managed to split father and son John and Tim Dallaway in the Pre-65 350cc class but it was Oxford's Kevin Allen who looked a possible winner until a poor last race spoiled his chances. The bigger Pre-65 over 350cc class produced some memorable dices between the two big-hitters Tim Manton and Terry Challinor with Terry's two wins to Tim's one just tipping the balance. The Pre-70 class produced some marvellous racing between Roberton and Pope with Andy getting the verdict by two wins to one. In third, after a good battling ride, was local lad Keith Barnes mounted on the injured Steve Dent's Faber BSA. Pre-74 250cc action saw three comfortable wins for Bridgnorth rider John Price on his screaming Honda Elsinore. Second was CZ man Gerard Copping and third after a great ride was Kendal's Aaron Dent on another two-stroke Honda. The bigger Pre-74 class saw the older BSA of Roberton defeat the 380 CZ of Brian Littler with Hereford's Wayne Partington taking third. There were three straight wins for Preston's Patrick Iddon on his flying 400 Yamaha in the Pre-77 class with spectacular Scottish rider Tom Anderson second on his Husky, while fellow Husky rider Jem Parker stormed to third. Scott Maxwell lost the Pre-76 CCM class to a grateful Tony Barnes after an unfortunate first race but he rode with tremendous spirit and speed to win the next two. The consistent Trevor Dart finished third. Jimmy Aird rode with his usual entertaining style to win the Post-75 CCM class with Tow Law's lan Charlton ' second ahead of Rob Spry. There were plenty of fireworks from the Twin-shock Bandits but in the end it was Martin Snape who took the win from Cumbrians Pete Lightfoot and Rob Butler with the Montesa of Ken Sourbutts never far from the sharp end. In Twin-shock Pirates Scotland's Walter Bickmore took classy wins from a very strong field which included Alan Eaves and Mark Silvester in second and third. A packed marquee saw legendary photographer and Guest of Honour Eric Kitchen present the prizes including the Man of the Meeting trophy to Andy Roberton.
